People's Sequence
Within the site of Northwest Portland, there is a concentration of creative spaces. However, this characteristic does not sufficiently reflect the atmosphere of the public realm. There is a disconnect between the public and private sectors that inhabit the site, coordinating with the lack of public life. This project proposes to bring the artistic environment of the site's surroundings into the public domain. By creating a sequence of creativity-driven public spaces moving through the north park blocks, PNCA, and the current post office site, we are contributing to the development of the green loop and claiming West Burnside street to the Broadway Bridge as the Portland's Dedicated Art Sector. The project is broken down into three elements — element one forces on the people's introduction to the site. The community will construct the space; this could include a dedicated area for public performances or engaging art installations. The second element of the sequence aims to link the public to practicing students and professionals in the art community, thus creating a familiarity between the two. Space could be expressed through temporary pinup spaces to display work and host gatherings. The third element aims to further smear the lines between the public, local art institutions, and creative businesses. Blocks of varying spaces will collide to create spaces for observation, learning, and expression. Each block additionally has the potential to resituate its inhabitants with the use of view corridors.
